Go Green at Your Next Barbeque

If you’re planning to barbeque this Fourth of July, there are some stormwater-savvy tips you need to know.
Whether in your own backyard or at a local park, when you fire up the barbeque you can make a big impact on our environment, including our watershed, if you’re not careful.
Here’s how you can host your next stormwater-smart barbeque:
- Leave no trace of food – Think twice before tossing out that burger grease! When it comes to the fatty remnants from cooking, transfer it into a sealed bag or container, so that oil doesn’t leak or spill.
- Minimize waste – Just say no to paper and plastic cutlery! These can get blown out of trash cans and be an eye-sore at our local parks. Stick with reusable or biodegradable plates and utensils made from 100 percent recycled materials, so we can keep our parks clean. You can also cut down on waste by packing your picnic supplies in a reusable tote instead of plastic bags.
- Properly dispose of trash – Don’t be a litterbug! Any trash left behind will encourage harmful bacterial growth, which will make its way into our watershed and impair water quality for residents and animals alike. Come prepared to your barbeque with one bin for trash and another bin for recyclables. Label each bin clearly. Then, sort and take the recyclables to a recycling center near you.
- Pick after your pet – If any furry friends are joining the party, bring doggie-doo bags to clean up after them. Animal waste is one of the High Desert’s biggest stormwater pollution culprits.
