Go green and compost your Thanksgiving dinner waste!
Thanksgiving is drawing near, and this year we are thankful to those who help keep our watershed clean. It’s not always easy to think of fun ways to change old habits, so we are here to help. Composting is a great way to aid in the prevention of stormwater pollution this holiday season by reducing waste and creating a natural and chemical-free substitution for fertilizer. Confused on where to start? Look no further!
What is composting?
Organic matter that has been decomposed is a process called composting. Compost is easily handmade—simply gather food scraps straight from your kitchen. This compost can be added to soil to help your plants grow beautifully. Check out this article from Gardening Know How to see what you can compost.
Why should I compost this Thanksgiving?
According to a Stanford University report, Americans are expected to collect about 25% more waste during the holidays.
Composting not only helps prevent some of this waste from going to the landfill, but it also acts as a perfect natural and rich fertilizer that substitutes the other harsh chemical fertilizers that can create pollution in our water.
How do I start?
Start by rounding up the family for this fun and eco-friendly activity. Find an area outside that gets a good amount of sunshine daily, and let’s begin!
- Grab a bin (or a few) the bigger the bin the more you can compost.
- Round up twigs, leaves, fruit, and veggie scraps to build your compost bin.
- Mix and turn your compost pile once a week to help break down materials.
- After the family’s delicious Thanksgiving feast, don’t forget to throw all excess food in the compost bin.
- In four to six months you’ll have a rich fertilizer that you can use on your lawn, garden, or to plant a tree! We recommend one of these water-wise plants.
Composting is a fun and easy way to reduce waste, prevent water pollution and spend some quality time with the family! After all, isn’t that what the holidays are all about?
