The truth is, our furry friends are a huge part of our families. February is National Responsible Pet Owners Month and we want to share a few stormwater-savvy ways to be a responsible pet owner not only this month, but all year long!

  1. Take Care of Business.

Part of being a responsible pet owner means taking our pets for walks to keep them healthy and happy. However, when our pets leave behind waste during these walks or trips outdoors, it can have a negative affect on our watershed. A good tip to keep in mind is to always pick up after your pet immediately when it is time for them to “take care of business,” so we can avoid bacteria from pet waste seeping into the ground and into our drinking water! To add that extra touch of responsibility—always use a biodegradable bag so we don’t add to the forever waste floating among the planet.

  1. Plastic? A thing of the past!

We all love our pets and want to spoil them with love and gifts whenever we can. By choosing toys made out of recycled material or sustainable fibers (such as hemp), we can shower our furry friends with all the accessories they deserve while also being a friend to our watershed and avoiding adding unnecessary plastics that could end up in our watershed and can take up to 450 years to biodegrade.

  1. Safe Suds for Bath Time

Bath time is an essential part of being a pet owner. While giving our pets a quick scrub outside might seem like the easier option, it is not the best option for our watershed. Chemicals from the soaps can run into the stormdrains and end up in our drinking water. Instead, opt to wash your pets indoors, with non-toxic suds, or take them to a professional groomer. We found a list of some good shampoos here!
